University of Siena – 1240 – Siena, Italy

Firstly known as the Studium Senese, the college changed into formally based in 1240, when the chief Justice of the Peace of the town levied a tax on any citizen who rented rooms to students. He then used that tax to pay the wages of instructors at the Studium. In 1252 the university changed into granted similarly legitimacy whilst Pope innocent IV declared that its students and teachers were absolutely exempt from taxes charged via the city of Siena. In 2006 the college had 20,000 students, almost 1/2 of Siena’s total population.
