The university was founded in 1293, when a Royal Charter from King Sancho IV of Castile granted the Archbishop of Toledo permission to found a Studium Generale, Estudio de Escuelas Generales de Alcalá. In 1499 the name was changed to Universitas Complutensis, after the name of the university’s location. Today, the school consistently ranks as the top university in Spain, and is home to 85,000 students.
